Remembrance Sunday
Longfield church was decorated, inside and out, for the 2024 Remembrance Sunday service. Despite being such a poignant reminder of so much suffering and sacrifice, the poppies gave warmth to the white stone of the church building and lifted spirits.
The church was almost full for the service, which took place on Sunday 10th November. The uniformed organisations were well represented and flagbearers presented their colours and the Union Jack. It was a pleasure to have the young people with us and to see them so engaged with everything that took place.
A poppy themed craft activity was organised for the small children at the back of the church.
The Reverend Joss Walker gave the address, including a poem about ‘painting peace’ which the children and young people helped to present.
The congregation was joined by more members of the community for The Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial at 11 o’clock. Prayers were said, wreaths were laid and the list of the war dead was read out. We are grateful to the trumpeter and piper whose musical offerings added to the air of solemnity. Hearing the Last Post prior to the two minute silence can be a chilling experience and make one think of the desolation that sometimes exists following a battle. Standing side by side around the memorial in silence we would all have had our own thoughts and made our own prayers.
Refreshments were served in the Jubilee Hall afterwards, allowing an opportunity for people to enjoy a time of fellowship and friendship.
Please pray for peace, and remember especially the people of the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan.
